Betty’s Buys: Braised Bean Curd with Mixed Vegetables and Plain Boiled Rice at Pilgrim House, Southampton

Pilgrim House Chinese Restaurant, Pilgrim House, Canute Road, Southampton, SO14 3FJ Tel: 02380 338008 www.pilgrimhousechineserestaurant.co.uk

We went out to Pilgrim House in Southampton for a Chinese meal to celebrate Ant’s mums birthday. The menu was very similar to The Water Margin in North Baddesley. In fact they had the same dish I had before: “Lo-Han” Monk’s Vegetables (mixed vegetables dish favoured by Buddhist Monks)

I decided to try a different vegetarian option this time. I am not a vegetarian myself but opting for a veggie dish can save you a lot of calories and fat.  I also really like bean curd / tofu and have only found it on the menu so far at Chinese restaurants.

Tofu or bean curd is a food made by coagulating soy milk and then pressing the resulting curds into soft white blocks. Tofu contains a low amount of calories, relatively large amount of iron, and little fat. Depending on the coagulant used in manufacturing, the tofu may also be high in calcium and/or magnesium. It is an important source of protein in the vegetarian diet.
